Most rust on a car starts where nobody looks: underneath, where road salt, mud and water sit against the floor, the chassis legs, the sills and the suspension mounts all winter. Underbody protection deals with it before it becomes a repair. The underside is washed and degreased to get the salt and packed mud out, left to dry, and inspected, so surface rust can be treated and anything more serious can be pointed out to you honestly. A protective underbody coating then goes on to seal the metal against water and salt, with the exhaust, brakes and sensors kept clear. It is worth doing on a car you plan to keep, on a 4x4 that goes off-road or onto the beach, on an older car before it starts to rust, and on any car before winter. Done in the studio
All prices are from prices by vehicle size, confirmed once Nick has seen the car: every car is different. Mobile work: the first 10 miles are free, then 30p a mile.
The underside, the wheel arches and the sills are washed to shift road salt, mud and grease, which hold water against the metal.
Once dry, the floor, chassis legs, sills and mounts are checked. You are told what is surface rust and what needs a welder, before any coating goes on.
Loose rust is brushed off and treated, so the protection goes onto sound metal rather than sealing corrosion in.
The exhaust, brakes, sensors and anything that must stay clean are covered.
A protective underbody coating is applied to the exposed metal to keep water and salt off it.
Gritting salt is the main cause. It dissolves in the spray thrown up from the road, gets into seams and behind panels, and keeps working long after the winter ends. Mud packed into the arches holds that salty water against the metal. Cars that live near the coast, go off-road or are washed on top but never underneath suffer most, which is why two cars of the same age can be very different underneath.

Before winter, when the underside is still sound and before the gritters are out. A new or nearly new car gets the most from it, because there is nothing to treat first.
Not if the metal has already rusted through or is weak. Protection slows corrosion on sound metal; structural rust needs a repair by a garage or a welder. You are told what the inspection finds before any work is done.
