Mould in a car always starts with water: a blocked sunroof or scuttle drain, a failed door or windscreen seal, a leaking pollen filter housing, or a spilled drink that soaked into the carpet and never dried. Cleaning the mould without finding the water only moves the problem a few weeks down the line, so the first step is to find where it is getting in, and if that is a seal or a drain, it goes to a garage before the clean. Then the affected seats, carpets and the underlay beneath them are extracted, treated with an antimicrobial cleaner, dried properly, and the car is given an ozone treatment to break down the smell that is left. The same method deals with smoke, pets and old food smells. Mould spores can bother people with asthma or allergies, so it is worth dealing with quickly. Nick covers Deeside, Chester and Wrexham.

The damp areas are traced back to where the water is getting in. A seal or drain problem is fixed first, usually by a garage.
Mats out, affected seats and carpets extracted, and the underlay checked, because it holds water long after the carpet feels dry.
An antimicrobial cleaner on the affected areas and hard surfaces, and the cabin filter checked.
The car is dried properly, which can take longer than the cleaning.
An ozone treatment in the empty, closed car breaks down the smell that remains. The car is aired afterwards before anyone gets in.
Smells live in fabric, carpet and the headlining, and in the air conditioning. Air fresheners cover them for a day. The way to remove them is to clean the source out of the soft surfaces, then use ozone to deal with what is left in the cabin. Smoke is the hardest: a heavy smoker's car improves a great deal, but the headlining and the vents take the longest.
Mould releases spores into the air, and the cabin is a small, closed space. For people with asthma, allergies or weak immune systems it is worth treating promptly and not driving around with it. Heavy mould in the headlining or behind panels can mean parts need replacing, and you will be told honestly if that is the case.

Because water is getting in or staying in. The usual causes are blocked sunroof or scuttle drains, failed door or screen seals, and wet carpets that never dry. The source has to be fixed or the mould comes back.
Mould spores can irritate the airways and trouble people with asthma or allergies, especially in a closed cabin. It is worth treating quickly and ventilating the car until then.
Ozone breaks down odour molecules in the cabin and soft surfaces, and it works well after the source has been cleaned out. On its own, over a dirty interior, it is a partial fix.
It can be greatly reduced with a deep clean of the fabrics, carpets and headlining, a new cabin filter and ozone. A heavy smoker's car takes the most work.
