Headlight restoration
Headlight lenses are made of polycarbonate plastic, and years of sunlight break down the factory UV coating until the surface turns yellow, cloudy and rough. It makes a car look older than it is, and a hazy lens scatters the light instead of putting it on the road. Restoration removes the damaged outer layer by wet sanding through progressively finer grades, polishes the lens back to clear, and then seals it with a UV-resistant coating, because a lens that is polished but not sealed goes yellow again within months. The job takes around an hour or two for a pair, and it is done at the studio in Connah's Quay, for customers across Deeside, Chester and Wrexham. It is a clear improvement on almost every car, but it is not a repair: cracked lenses, moisture inside the lamp and failed bulbs need a garage.

Why headlights go yellow
Polycarbonate is used because it is light and hard to break, but it is not naturally UV stable. The factory hard coat protects it for some years; once that coating weathers away, the plastic oxidises. The yellowing is on the outside of the lens in almost every case, which is why it can be restored. If the haze is on the inside, or there are droplets inside the lamp, the seal has failed and that is a different problem.
How the lens is restored

Mask
The paint and trim around the lamp are taped off so nothing touches them.

Wet sand
The oxidised layer is removed evenly, working through finer grades until the whole lens is uniformly smooth.

Polish
A machine polish brings the lens from hazy back to clear.

Seal
A UV-resistant coating replaces the protection the factory coat used to give. This is the step quick fixes leave out.
Toothpaste, kits and why they fade
Toothpaste and the quick polishing kits sold in motor stores do make a lens look better for a while. They polish the surface but leave it unprotected, so the yellowing comes back, often within a few months, and sometimes worse. Sealing is what makes the result last.
Headlights and the MOT
The MOT checks headlamps, including their condition and the beam. Badly clouded lenses scatter the light, and a restored lens is clearer and brighter on the road. Restoration is not a promise of an MOT pass, because the tester also checks the aim, the bulbs and the lamp itself, but it is often the first thing worth doing on an older car before a test.

Headlight restoration: straight answers
How long does headlight restoration last?
With a proper UV seal, the lens should stay clear for years rather than months. Unsealed polishing, including most home kits, typically yellows again within the year.
Can cloudy headlights fail an MOT?
The MOT checks the condition of the headlamps and the beam. Severe clouding can affect the light output. Restoring the lenses helps, but the tester also checks aim, bulbs and the lamp unit.
Can you restore headlights with condensation inside?
No. Moisture inside means the lamp's seal has failed, and that needs a repair or a replacement lamp. Restoration only treats the outside of the lens.
Can headlights be restored at my house?
No. Headlight restoration is done at the studio in Connah's Quay, where the lens can be sanded, polished and sealed out of the weather. Valets and interior cleans are the jobs that come to you.
