A wrap changes how a car looks without touching the paint underneath. Nick wraps cars himself: full colour changes, partial wraps such as a gloss black roof, mirrors or bonnet, and chrome delete, where the chrome window surrounds, grilles and badges are covered in gloss or satin black so the car looks cleaner and more modern. What can be wrapped

  • Full colour change, in gloss, satin or matte finishes
  • Roofs, mirrors, bonnets, spoilers and pillars in black or a contrast colour
  • Chrome delete: window surrounds, grilles, badges and trim in gloss or satin black

Chrome delete

Many cars leave the factory with chrome window surrounds and grille trim. Covering them in gloss or satin black gives a cleaner, more modern look that suits darker colours especially. The vinyl is fitted over the existing trim, so it can be removed later and the chrome underneath is protected.

A wrap is also an answer to paint that has faded past saving. This BMW 1 Series came in with chalky, oxidised red paint and left in a satin red wrap. Brake calipers are painted rather than wrapped: see brake caliper painting.

Before you wrap

  • The paint underneath should be in good condition: a wrap shows dents and deep chips through it
  • If you change the colour of the whole car, you must tell the DVLA, and it is worth telling your insurer
  • Hand wash a wrapped car and keep a pressure washer away from the edges

Wrapping and styling: straight answers

Does a wrap damage the paint?

Not on sound factory paint. A good vinyl protects the paint while it is on and comes off cleanly. Resprayed or damaged paint is more at risk when a wrap is removed.

Do I need to tell the DVLA if I wrap my car?

If the wrap changes the main colour of the car, yes, you should tell the DVLA so the registration record matches. Chrome delete and partial wraps such as a roof do not change the main colour.

How much is a wrap or chrome delete?
