What is car detailing, and how is it different from valeting?

The short answer
Car detailing is cleaning, restoring and protecting a car to a much higher standard than a wash or a valet. A car wash cleans the outside. A valet cleans the car inside and out by hand. A detail goes further in both directions: deeper into the places a valet does not reach, such as vents, seams, door shuts and wheel barrels, and further in what it does to the paint, which is decontaminated, machine polished to remove swirl marks, and protected with a sealant or ceramic coating. In short, a valet makes a car clean, and a detail makes it look looked-after again.

What a full detail includes
A detail is not a fixed menu, but a proper one covers the same ground. Outside, the car is pre-washed with snow foam, hand washed with two buckets, then decontaminated: an iron remover dissolves the brake dust and industrial fallout stuck in the paint, a tar remover takes off the black spots, and a clay bar pulls out what is left. That is the part that makes paint feel smooth rather than gritty.
Then comes the part that makes the visible difference: machine polishing. Even one polishing stage removes a lot of the fine swirl marks that washing leaves, and brings back gloss. After polishing, the paint is protected with a sealant or a ceramic coating, because freshly polished paint is bare.
Inside, everything is hoovered, the seats and carpets are shampooed and extracted, leather is cleaned and conditioned, plastics are cleaned and dressed without a greasy shine, and the vents, seams and door shuts are brushed out.
Does detailing remove scratches?
It removes the scratches that sit in the clear coat, which are most of the marks people notice: swirl marks from washing, fine marring, holograms from a bad polish, and light scratches. It does not remove deep scratches that have gone through the clear coat into the colour, or stone chips. A quick test is a fingernail: if it catches in the scratch, polishing probably will not remove it safely, and it needs touch-up paint or a bodyshop.
How often a car needs detailing
Most cars do well with a full detail once or twice a year, usually one before winter to protect the paint against salt and one in spring to clear the winter out, with regular washes or valets in between. A car with a ceramic coating needs the full detail less often, because it stays cleaner and the coating does the protecting. A car that is sold, leased back or shown needs one at those moments too.
What it costs
Valets are priced by size and by how dirty the car is. Details cost more because of the time: a one-stage machine polish is a day's careful work on most cars, and a full correction longer. Around Chester and Wrexham, published prices for details with a machine polish start in the low hundreds of pounds, and details with a ceramic coating from roughly £400 upwards. The honest way to price a detail is to look at the car first, because two cars of the same model can need very different amounts of work.
Is it worth it?
A detail is worth it when the car has lost its gloss, has swirl marks you notice in the sun, has an interior that a valet will not rescue, or is about to be sold. It is also the right start before a ceramic coating. It is not worth paying for if the car is going straight back through an automatic brush wash every week, because that is what caused most of the marks in the first place.
