Paint correction explained: stages, time and cost

The short answer
Paint correction is machine polishing that removes a microscopically thin layer of the clear coat to level out swirl marks, holograms, wash marring and light scratches, so the paint reflects light cleanly again. It is done in stages. A single-stage correction, often called an enhancement, uses one polish to remove light defects and restore gloss, and usually takes a day. A two-stage correction uses a cutting stage to remove heavier defects and a finishing stage to refine the surface, and takes longer. In the UK it typically costs from a few hundred pounds for a single stage on a small car, rising for two-stage work on larger cars, and it is almost always the step before a ceramic coating.
What is being removed
Modern car paint is a colour layer with a clear coat on top, and the clear coat is thin: typically tens of microns, less than the thickness of a sheet of paper. Swirl marks and marring are scratches in the top of that clear coat. Polishing removes a tiny amount of the clear coat around them so the surface is level again and light reflects evenly. Anything deeper than the clear coat, such as a scratch into the colour or a stone chip, cannot be polished out.

How a good correction is done

Measure
A paint depth gauge on every panel, to find thin areas and re-sprayed panels before polishing.

Decontaminate
Wash, iron remover, tar remover and clay, so the pads work on paint rather than grit.

Test section
The gentlest combination of pad and polish that gets the result, found on a small area first.

Correct panel by panel
Small sections at a time, checked under strong light.

Refine and inspect
A finishing stage for clarity, then the polishing oils are wiped off to see the true result.

Protect
A sealant or ceramic coating, because corrected paint is bare paint.
What it costs in the UK
Correction is priced on time, and time depends on the car's size, the paint's hardness and how marked it is. Published UK price lists run from a few hundred pounds for a single-stage enhancement on a small car to well over £1,000 for multi-stage work on a large car. Around Chester and Wrexham, detailers price correction the same way: by stage and by size, after seeing the car.
Will the swirl marks come back?
The removed marks are gone for good. New ones come back if the car is washed the way it was before, with automatic brushes, one gritty bucket or a dry towel dragged across the paint. With a safe hand wash and ideally a ceramic coating on top, a corrected car stays corrected for years.

How long does paint correction take?
About a day for a single-stage enhancement on an average car, one to two days for a two-stage correction, and longer for multi-stage work or large vehicles.
Will swirl marks come back after paint correction?
The removed marks do not come back. New ones appear if the car is washed badly again, which is why a safe wash routine and a coating matter after correction.
Can a new car need paint correction?
Often, yes, lightly. Transport, storage and dealer preparation washes can leave fine marring. A new car usually needs a light single-stage polish rather than a full correction.
Does paint correction include ceramic coating?
Not automatically; they are two separate jobs. Correction removes the defects, and a coating protects the corrected paint. They are very often booked together.
