How much does ceramic coating cost in the UK?

The short answer
A professional ceramic coating in the UK usually costs from a few hundred pounds for an entry-level coating on a car in good condition to well over £1,000 for a premium, multi-year coating on a large car that needs a full paint correction first. Around Chester and Wrexham, published prices for a coating with a machine polish start at roughly £400, and five-year coatings on larger cars are advertised nearer £900. Most of the price is labour, not the product: the paint has to be washed, decontaminated and machine polished before any coating goes on, and that preparation can take anything from a few hours on a new car to two days on a neglected one.

What drives the price
- The paint's condition: a new car needs a light polish; a car with years of swirls needs a two-stage correction, which is a day or more of work
- The size of the car: a small hatchback has far less paint to prepare than a large SUV or a van
- The coating: longer-rated and multi-layer coatings cost more to buy and take longer to apply
- The extras: wheels (faces or wheels-off barrels), glass, trim and interior fabrics can all be coated
- Guarantees: some coatings are sold with a registered guarantee and maintenance conditions
Why quotes vary so much
Two quotes for the same car can be hundreds of pounds apart and both be honest, because they describe different jobs. One might include a two-stage correction and a five-year coating; the other a quick wash and a one-year coating over the existing marks. Ask what preparation is included, how many polishing stages, how long the car will be with them, which coating and how long it is rated for, and what the guarantee requires.
Red flags in a cheap quote
- No inspection of the car before the price is fixed
- No machine polishing, or a polish promised in an hour or two on a car that needs more
- A spray-on product sold as a ceramic coating
- Applied outdoors, on a driveway, in damp or dusty conditions
- Claims that the coating is scratch-proof, permanent or maintenance-free
DIY costs
DIY coatings and ceramic sprays cost from under £20 to around £50 in motor stores. They can add gloss and water beading to a car that is already in good condition. They do not include the decontamination and machine polishing that make the difference to how a car looks, and a poorly levelled coating leaves high spots that need polishing off.
